It was not immediately clear how many missiles were fired and what type they were
North Korea fired multiple cruise missiles off its east coast today, South Korea’s military said, the latest in a series of weapons tests by Pyongyang as South Korean and US forces hold joint military exercises.
The missiles were launched at around 10:15 (local time, 03:15 Greek time) from North Korea’s South Hamgyong province, the same source said.
It was not immediately clear how many missiles were fired and what type they were.
South Korea’s armed forces are on high alert and South Korean and US intelligence agencies are analyzing details of the missiles, the South Korean military’s general staff said.
“We will successfully complete the Freedom Shield high schools as planned,” the staff stressed.
The allies are expected to finish tomorrow, Thursday, the 11-day high school called Freedom Shield.
Today’s launches came just three days after North Korea fired a short-range ballistic missile into the sea off its east coast.
Pyongyang has cracked down on high schools run by South Korean and US forces, saying they are preparation for an invasion of North Korea. South Korea and the US deny this, arguing that they should instead prepare to defend against North Korean aggression.
South Korea’s Yonhap news agency reported that today’s launches may have involved North Korean strategic cruise missiles. The term “strategic” is typically used to describe nuclear-capable weapons.
