The French presidency announced that the king’s schedule has not yet been finalized
Protests in France could affect plans for a planned state visit by Britain’s King Charles next week, a Buckingham Palace source said today.
“We are closely monitoring the situation and taking advice from the Foreign Ministry and the French side,” the source said. “Logistics issues may be affected.”
President Emmanuel Macron will look for ways to calm the situation amid growing anger across France over his pension reform plan.
Trash cans and barricades were set on fire at protests in Paris and other cities across the country on Tuesday in a sixth night of clashes between protesters and police.
King Charles is due to travel to France on Sunday as part of an official visit — his first since ascending to the British throne.
His trip includes a visit to the Musée d’Orsay and dinner at the Palace of Versailles.
It also includes events at the Arc de Triomphe before departing by train for the city of Bordeaux.
The French presidency announced that the king’s schedule has not yet been finalized.
Opposition MPs have called on Macron to cancel the visit due to ongoing tensions in the country.
The daily protests, along with rolling strikes that have affected the country’s oil sector, public transport and waste collection — mainly in Paris — pose the most serious threat to the centrist president’s power since the “Yellow Vest” protests of since four years.
“Unbelievable! We will have Emmanuel Macron, the monarch, who is going to welcome King Charles III at Versailles,” said Sandrine Rousseau, an MP for the Ecologist party.
“Of course he will have to cancel his visit. Is it really a priority to welcome Charles III at Versailles?”
Demonstrators have already clashed with police in Versailles over the pension reform bill, which has sparked popular discontent, with police blocking their way towards the building, which was built in the 17th century during the reign of Louis XIV. ‘ .
