The first big fire of the year in Spainwhich caused the removal of approximately 1,500 people from their homes, remains out of control today in the eastern part of the country due to conditions that favor its expansion.

“We are dealing with a fire that is rather typical of the summer,” Manolo Nicolas, a spokesman for the firefighters of the province of Castellón, where the fire broke out, told public radio station RNE.

Speaking from Brussels, where he participated in the European summit, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said that such a “fire so early in the year is further proof of the climate emergency that humanity is experiencing and which particularly affects countries such as our”.

“All I can ask” of the population “is to show the greatest prudence” in the face of “this terrible fire,” he insisted, promising to “allocate all resources” to extinguish it.

According to the regional government of Valencia, where the province of Castellón is located, 450 firefighters with the support of 22 aerial vehicles are battling the flames that have reduced 30,000 hectares of vegetation to ashes.

This fire occurred yesterday, Thursday, afternoon in the location of Villanueva de Viver and caused the evacuation of about 1,500 people in the region of Valencia and neighboring Aragon, explained the second in command of the regional government of Valencia Aitana Mas.

There are “the perfect elements for a fire with these characteristics”, stressed Manolos Nikolas, citing the drought of the last months which has created “a large amount of fuel”, mainly dry bushes and undergrowth in the forests.

He also underlined the effect of the east wind, which will strengthen in the next hours, making the work of the firefighters more difficult.

The zone of greatest concern is near the tourist resort of Montanejos, which had to be evacuated while its hotels were full, its mayor, Miguel Santalinas, told RNE.

“Today the temperature will be 30 degrees” while we are “only in March”, he added, denouncing the consequences of “climate change”.
