A day after a US contractor was killed and 5 US soldiers and another US contractor were injured when a suspected Iranian drone struck a coalition base in the same area
New missile attack aimed US base in the northeast Syria on Friday, a day after a U.S. contractor was killed and five U.S. soldiers and another U.S. contractor were wounded when a suspected Iranian drone struck a coalition base in the same area, according to U.S. officials.
According to CBSnews, US officials confirmed the new strike targeting a US base southeast of Syria’s Der el-Zour province on Friday, saying “several rockets” were fired, but there were no US casualties so far.
Earlier, it was announced that Friday’s missile targeted a US base near the Al-Omar oil field in northeastern Syria. Photos and reports on social media suggested that at least one missile had missed its intended target, hitting houses in the area.
The strike came hours after US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said US Central Command forces responded to Thursday’s deadly drone strike with “precision airstrikes” against facilities in eastern Syria used by groups linked to the Revolutionary Guard of Iran. The Defense Department said the intelligence community had determined that the drone used in Thursday’s attack was of Iranian origin.

While not the first time the US and Iran have traded blows in Syria, the attack and the US response threaten to derail recent efforts to de-escalate tensions in the wider Middle East, which rival powers have taken steps towards recession in recent days after years of turmoil.
