On 27 March 2023, the Commission is organizing for the first time the European Authors’ Day, a new initiative led by the Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, Maria Gabriel.

This day will be an opportunity to reconnect younger generations with reading books, and show them how literature can be a tool for individual empowerment. Reading can give especially secondary school students the opportunity to deal with ongoing social and personal challenges. The new annual celebration also aims to promote the richness and diversity of European literature and is an opportunity to highlight the importance of all programs and initiatives to promote reading carried out in individual European countries.

Secondary schools across Europe have been encouraged to organize reading sessions with authors, well-known figures or representatives of the book industry who will talk to pupils about the various professions involved in the production of a book, from the author to the illustrator, translator, editor, and more. More than 1,000 schools across Europe are organizing reading sessions on EU Writers’ Day in 2023.

This year 100 European writers will visit schools to read excerpts of their works and encourage students to discover other European writers. The Commission organizes this European Writers’ Tour in cooperation with the European Writers’ Council and the European Union Prize for Literature consortium.

Also on March 27, the European Writers’ Day Conference, a day to promote reading, takes place in Sofia, Bulgaria. The conference will bring together representatives from the ministries of culture and education of the EU countries, public organizations and national NGOs active in the field, as well as organizations representing the publishing sector at European level. It will be an opportunity to share examples and practices on how the education system and the publishing sector can work together to promote reading in schools at local, national and European level. You can watch the conference online.

On European Writers’ Day, we are all invited to share on social media the image of a book by our favorite European author with the hashtag #ReadWithEurope.
