Article-appeal “for the fair taxation of the super-rich” is signed by 142 MEPs from 4 political groups (Left, Greens, Socialists, Renew), in the French newspaper “Le Monde”, among them the MEPs of SYRIZA.

According to the article – which republishes a statement by SYRIZA/The Left – in a world where income earners like Elon Musk or Jeff Bezos are able to pay no federal income tax, “the very wealthy use complex tax arrangements to keep their tax rate to a minimum – something ordinary households cannot do.”

To put an end to this situation, there should be a gradual taxation of the great wealth, with “a progressive tax on the wealth of the super-rich, in order to reduce inequalities and at the same time finance the necessary investments for the ecological and social transition”.

To those who say that such a thing is impossible, the MEPs reply that “we have already succeeded once in reaching an agreement on the global minimum taxation of multinational companies, when everyone said it was impossible”.

As then, so now, “the implementation of such an agreement requires real political will, especially from elected officials and the government.”

For this reason they call “international organizations, such as the OECD and the UN to start a round of negotiations on the taxation of extreme wealth” but also “the Member States of the European Union as well as the Commission to work towards the conclusion of these negotiations as soon as possible”.
