Famed American actor Richard Gere today expressed his anger before a congressional committee at the Chinese government’s “brutal” treatment of Tibetans during a hearing into allegations of human rights abuses in the Himalayan region.
An advocate of Tibetan rights, the 73-year-old actor accused the Chinese authorities of “brutality, collective violence and persecution” against the indigenous people.
Tibet has been a province of China since the 1950s. Many Tibetans living in exile accuse Beijing of repression and torture, claiming it seeks to wipe out their culture.
About a million Tibetan children have been forcibly separated from their families and taken to residential schools, three UN experts said in February.
Richard Gere has appealed to the governments of the US and its allies to unite their voices, calling on Beijing to restart dialogue on the “autonomy regime” of the Tibetans.
