32-year-old Ivan Gershkovich was arrested in the Urals city of Yekaterinburg on suspicion of espionage – Russia’s Federal Security Service announces no evidence of guilt
Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) announced today that Wall Street Journal correspondent Ivan Gershkovich was arrested in the Urals city of Yekaterinburg on suspicion of espionage, the Interfax news agency reported.
Details are sparse but this seems very bad. @evangershkovich has lots of experience in Russia, has official accreditation & is obviously not a spy. This could be a game-changer for foreign media still working there https://t.co/VAapngtExp

“The FSB prevented the illegal activity of the accredited correspondent (…) of the Moscow bureau of the American newspaper Wall Street Journal, a citizen of the United States, Ivan Gershkovich,” the FSB said in a statement cited by Russian news agencies.

The announcement clarifies that the 32-year-old journalist was suspected of “espionage” for the benefit of Washington.
Specifically, according to Russian intelligence, Gershkovich was tasked “on the American side” with gathering information about “the activities of an operation of the military-defense complex.”
However, the FSB did not provide any evidence to support this claim.
The Wall Street Journal for which the 32-year-old correspondent works has not commented on the news.
