A woman 36 years old, who closed her in a grave, in a cemetery of the State of Minas Gerais in Brazilwas found alive after experiencing an indescribable torture for almost ten hours.

The alarm was raised on Tuesday by employees of the municipal cemetery of Visconde do Rio Branco, who saw traces of blood near a burial crypt. The chamber had recently been sealed with bricks and cement, local police said in a statement.

“The police officers heard calls for help (from inside the ward), broke through the wall and pulled out a woman, with injuries to her head and hands,” the statement said.

The perpetrators buried the woman alive in this crypt, a structure that allows the dead to be buried in chambers above ground level. Police believe she had been locked there since the night before.

Two suspects, aged 20 and 22, are still being sought by authorities.

The police inspector in charge of the investigation, Diego Candian Alves, said it was likely a case of “revenge” by members of a gang active in arms and drug smuggling.

The woman told the police that two masked men entered her home and kidnapped her after beating her husband. She remains in hospital but her condition is “improving”, the G1 news website reported, citing medical sources.
