Russia will strengthen its military power in its western and northwestern regions in response to Finland joining NATO today, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grusko said, Russian state news agency RIA reported.

Finland will become the 31st member of the Atlantic Alliance tomorrow, it announced earlier today NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenbergconfirming the announcement made earlier by the Finnish presidency.

Finland has a 1,300-kilometer border with Russia, and with its entry into the Alliance, the kilometers of border shared by NATO member states with Russia will almost double.

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu stated last year that Russia receives “appropriate countermeasures” and will form 12 units and divisions in its western military district.

Grusko told RIA: “We will strengthen our military capabilities in the western and northwestern direction. In the event that the forces and resources of other NATO members are deployed in Finland, we will take additional measures to reliably ensure Russia’s military security.”
