“The line of contact between NATO and the borders of the Russian Federation has more than doubled. This is a significant change for Northern Europe, which has been one of the most stable regions in the world,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
Moscow’s anger was caused by the completion of Finland’s NATO accession process on Tuesday. The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs threatens to respond with military-technical, as well as “other” measures, however, he clarifies that he wants to first examine the terms of Helsinki’s accession to the North Atlantic Alliance.
“On April 4, 2023, it was officially announced that all legal procedures related to Finland’s accession to NATO were completed. As we have repeatedly warned, the Russian Federation will have to respond with military-technical as well as other measures in order to to address national security threats arising from Finland’s accession to NATO” says the Russian Foreign Ministry.
“The specific decisions regarding increasing defense capabilities along Russia’s northwestern border will depend on the specific terms under which Finland will join NATO, including the development of military infrastructure and offensive weapons of NATO on its territory” it is clarified anyway.
“The line of contact between NATO and the borders of the Russian Federation has more than doubled. This is a significant change for Northern Europe, which has been one of the most stable regions in the world. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization has taken another step closer to Russian soil. (…)»
“By joining NATO, Finland has given up its unique identity and lost its independence, which for decades gave it a special place in international affairs. Helsinki’s policy of military non-alignment has long served its national interests and has been an important confidence-builder in the Baltic region and across the European continent. But now all that is in the past” is noted.
According to Moscow, “Finland became a junior member of NATO without the ability to influence any decisions. It has lost its ability to have a say in international affairs.” “History will tell if Finland needed to do this bad step, which the country’s government undertook without taking into account the citizens’ opinion about it by holding a referendum and carefully considering the consequences of joining NATO. We strongly believe that this is happening.”
“Finland’s accession to NATO will have a negative impact on bilateral relations between Russia and Finland,” the Russian government finally declares.
