THE Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov stated today that the suspension of participation in the New START treaty on nuclear arms control with the US, gave Moscow new opportunities to guarantee her safety, Russian news agencies reported.

President Vladimir Putin announced in February Russia’s withdrawal from the treaty, the last nuclear weapons treaty between the two Cold War superpowers. Russian officials have said it would be foolish to share information about Russia’s nuclear capabilities at a time when the U.S. could pass that information to Ukraine.

“We have gained additional opportunities for ourselves to ensure our safety” Ryabkov told Rossiya 24 TV news channel.

Ryabkov said the United States uses “every channel, every window to look into our own military world”so stopping inspections and intelligence sharing agreements through New START will make it harder for US intelligence to gather intelligence.

Russia has also stated that will continue to observe limits on the number of nuclear warheadsn that can be deployed under the New START treaty, despite the suspension of participation in it.

Ryabkov also said the West should take into account Russia’s decision to deploy nuclear weapons in Belarus.

“Our opponents must see the reality of what is happening around them” Ryabkov said according to TASS, adding: “Don’t escalate, don’t provoke us.”
