Violent incidents between inmates at a maximum security prison in Ecuador left three of them dead and another injured, the Latin American country’s penitentiary agency (SNAI) announced Tuesday.

“Three prisoners died and (another) one was injured,” SNAI said in a press release issued after the incident at the La Roca prison in Guayaquil (southwest), a major port of the country.

This maximum security prison, with a nominal capacity of 150 inmates, holds 23 suspects, mostly alleged leaders of drug-trafficking gangs.

Guards, police and military forces activated security protocols after the incidents, which allowed them to “regain control” of the situation, SNAI said.

La Roca prison, or Guayas 3, as it is officially called, has repeatedly turned into a theater of conflicts between the gangs “R7” and “Los Lobos”, which have ties respectively to the Mexican cartel Sinaloa and New Generation of Jalisco.

Since February 2021, there have been eight recorded massacres inside Ecuadorian prisons, with over 400 dead, many dismembered or burned alive.

In early November, the government organized transfers of thousands of inmates, sparking a violent gang response, with attacks in particular in Guayaquil, the country’s drug-trafficking hub.
