Wisconsin’s abortion law dates back to 1849 and is expected to be reviewed by the state Supreme Court in May
Wisconsin voters on Tuesday elected progressive Janet Protasewicz to the northern US state’s Supreme Court, according to US media, a victory for abortion rights advocates.
After Protasewich’s victory, the Wisconsin Supreme Court has four progressive justices to three conservatives. This election was considered one of the most important this year, as the fate of abortion rights in this state depended on its outcome.
“Congratulations to Janet Protasewicz on becoming the new Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice,” commented the state affiliate of Planned Parenthood.
In June 2022, the US Supreme Court overturned its landmark 1973 decision that protected women’s right to abortion at the federal level.
After the overturning of the decision in the case “Roe v. Wade” each state can decide whether to allow abortions on its territory. Many states, including Wisconsin, have abortion laws that were enacted before 1973.
At risk of being prosecuted, Planned Parenthood had canceled all abortions in Wisconsin following the US Supreme Court ruling.
“Abortion clinics in Wisconsin have temporarily stopped providing services because of an old law that completely bans abortion, which (state) officials may begin to re-enforce,” Abortion Finder explained at the time. a website that offers information on where to get an abortion in the US.
The law banning abortion in Wisconsin dates back to 1849 and is expected to be reviewed in May by the state Supreme Court.
