Germany: Ryanair will not fly from Frankfurt airport due to increased fares

by

Low cost airline Ryanair will not fly from Frankfurt Airport from the end of March due to increased airport charges.

According to Ryanair CEO Eddie Wilson, the company’s decision to withdraw its aircraft from Germany’s largest airport led to a 4.3% increase in airport charges. Other airports, unlike in Frankfurt, offered relief to airlines affected by the pandemic by reducing fares, Wilson said. Since 2017, five of the company’s aircraft have been stationed at Frankfurt International Airport, while until then only the smaller Frankfurt-Hahn airport was used.

According to the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, the management company Fraport is disappointed with Ryanair’s decision and especially with the fact that the charges are a crucial factor in the company’s decision to leave. It is also pointed out that the increases have been decided by the Parliament of Hesse and that they are “moderate” in relation to other airports of similar size.

However, Ryanair announced that it will invest in other locations in Germany, such as Nuremberg, and that 65 Boeing B737-8200 aircraft will be used in Europe next summer.
