The US government considers the arrest of Wall Street Journal journalist Evan Gershkovich in Russia to be “unjust”, the US Secretary of State said today Anthony Blinken.

“In my opinion, there is no doubt that he is being held unjustly by the Russian authorities,” Blinken told reporters in Brussels, adding that the State Department was working to secure the American journalist’s immediate release.

On Sunday, the US Secretary of State spoke with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrovcalling for Gerskovich’s release.

The WSJ reporter was arrested last week in Yekaterinburg by men from Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) on suspicion of espionage. He will remain in custody until May 29 and faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

The case adds fuel to the fire of tension in Washington-Moscow relations.

The White House is simultaneously making efforts to free the American Paul Whelanwho is serving a prison sentence in Russia after being convicted of espionage in 2018. “There has been a proposal on the table for some time,” the US top diplomat said, referring to the Whelan case.
