A Moscow court will consider on April 18 appeal filed by the prisoner’s attorneys Wall Street Journal reporter Ivan Gerskovich for lifting of his temporary detentionthe Interfax news agency reported today, citing the press service of the court.
Gershkovich, a US citizen of Russian descent, was arrested last week in the Urals city of Yekaterinburg on espionage charges that the Wall Street Journal, Western leaders and his colleagues have called false.
Shortly after his arrest, a Moscow court ordered his pre-trial detention in the Russian capital’s Lefortovo prison until at least May 29.
During the hearing, the journalist was not allowed to meet his lawyer and prosecutors did not release any information about the case.
The hearing on April 18 will also be held behind closed doors as Russia considers information related to the charges classified, Interfax reported.
Gershkovich’s arrest sparked an outcry from international leaders, including US President Joe Biden who called on Russia to “free him”, and has further soured US-Russian relations, already at their worst level in decades.
The Wall Street Journal “vehemently denies” the allegations, and dozens of news organizations have called on Russia to immediately release Gershkovic.
