An admittedly paradoxical incident with two arrests occurred in Japan where authorities arrested two sushi restaurant patrons for dipping their chopsticks into a shared bowl of ginger (apparently not with each patron’s chopsticks).

The incident happened in Osaka and according to the Guardian it was probably an unfortunate prank that the customers decided to play, even recording their actions in a video that went around the internet.

In fact, the British media reports that incidents of “sushi terrorism” with similar incidents are not rare in the catering industry in Japan.

Phenomena of indecent behavior of customers in restaurants began to be recorded since the beginning of the year in a number of sushi restaurants.

The arrests come just a short time after a man was charged with licking the top of a bottle of soy sauce, which, like the bowl of ginger, was meant to be shared by diners at the restaurant.

The 21-year-old is said to have sparked the idea from social media posts capturing people carrying out similar “acts of terror” at sushi restaurants.

The two arrested in this case, 34-year-old Oka and 35-year-old Shimazu, are accused of damaging foreign property, because they “contaminated” the bowl with pickled ginger.

“I wanted to make people laugh. I asked Shimazu to do something funny and that was the first thing that came to his mind. Then we shared it on social media because we thought it was really hilarious,” Oka told police.

The restaurant where the incident occurred was forced to close until it disinfected all its containers.

“We are truly sorry that this news has caused discomfort and concern to our customers,” a company spokesperson said.

“We sincerely hope that this will not happen again,” he added
