Protesters from the organization Renovate Switzerland stuck using glue to the road surface around the northern entrance of the Gotthard tunnel
Activists against climate change they caused traffic jam today in Switzerland when they blocked a key road under the Alps demanding action on global warming.
Protesters from the organization Renovate Switzerland stuck using glue to the road surface around the northern entrance of the Gotthard tunnel, the organization announced.
This tunnel is one of the main passages connecting northern Switzerland with Italy and a passage for travelers heading south from northern Europe.
Police were called to the scene and eventually removed the seven protesters, who were holding a “renovate” banner, after the demonstration began shortly after 10am.
“Renovate Switzerland is back on the streets”, the organization said via Twitter. “It is an appeal to our fellow citizens. Let’s together demand that the Swiss government finally declares a climate emergency.”

The organization said it wants the government to take climate change seriously and renovate the country’s buildings by 2035.
The temperature in Switzerland is rising at more than twice the global rate and glaciers are melting at a rapid rate.
In response, the government wants to invest 4.1 billion Swiss francs in renovating buildings, modernizing transport infrastructure and other measures to halve greenhouse emissions by 2030 from 1990 levels.
Karuna Babaji, a 19-year-old student, said she was afraid to take part in the protest but felt compelled to act. “I’m doing it because I’m horrified and angry that my generation is being sentenced to death,” he said.
Police from the Swiss canton of Uri were called to the scene and removed the protesters after 30 minutes. The members of the organization who participated in the mobilization, aged between 19 and 60, were arrested.
Police told Reuters the road had been reopened and traffic had been restored, although 17km-long queues of cars had formed.
