“We agreed to limit and temporarily stop exports to Poland,” Telous told reporters after meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart
Imports of Ukrainian grain to Poland will be temporarily halted to mitigate the impact on prices, but transit will still be allowed, he said today the Polish Minister of Agriculture Robert Telus.
Telous took office on Thursday after his predecessor resigned amid farmers’ protests over falling producer prices.
“We agreed to limit and temporarily stop exports to Poland”Telous told reporters after the meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart. “Transit will be allowed but closely supervised in both countries so that Ukrainian grain does not stay in Poland.”
Large quantities of Ukrainian grain, which is cheaper than that produced in the European Union, ends up in central European countries amid bottlenecks in supply chains, significantly affecting prices and sales for local farmers.
This has created a political problem for nationalists in the ruling Law and Justice Party (PiS) in an election year.
The prime ministers of five countries, including Poland, sent a letter last week to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen calling for action on imports of Ukrainian agricultural products.
