Israeli warplanes struck Syrian military targets today in retaliation for rockets fired into Israeli-controlled territory overnight, the Israeli military said.

Syrian state media reported explosions near the capital Damascus as Israel said its forces were continuing to pound Syrian territory after firing six rockets overnight at the Golan Heights.

Israel noted that artillery and drone strikes hit the rocket launchers and that these were followed by airstrikes against a Syrian army compound, military radar systems and artillery positions.

The Israeli military “holds the Syrian state responsible for all activities occurring within its territory and will not allow any attempts to violate Israeli sovereignty,” the Israel Defense Forces said in a statement.

The Syrian Ministry of Defense announced that its air defenses responded to the Israeli attacks and intercepted some Israeli missiles. He also added that no casualties were reported and that the blows caused only material damage.

Sirens had sounded earlier near towns in the Golan Heights as rockets were fired from Syrian territory, but no casualties or damage were reported.

Israel’s military said at least one of the rockets fired from Syria was intercepted by Israeli air defenses and two fell on empty land in the part of the Golan Heights annexed by Israel after its conquest in 1967.

Earlier, Lebanon-based Al Mayadeen TV reported that the Al Quds Brigades, the armed wing of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad group, claimed responsibility for firing rockets into the Golan Heights.
