“We will announce the visit on Wednesday,” said the Turkish Foreign Minister
Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry will travel to Ankara again this week, his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu said today, with the latter stressing that progress may be made from the visit to reappoint ambassadors a decade on. the severance of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
“Soukri will visit Turkey, probably this week. We will give further details about the visit on Wednesday,” said the Turkish Foreign Minister in an interview granted to the private television network A Haber.
The head of Turkish diplomacy added that the two countries are moving towards the stage of appointing ambassadors from each side. “It is time to take concrete steps,” he said. “During the Shukri visit, we can take steps to appoint ambassadors,” he said.
Cavusoglu visited Cairo last month, a decade after diplomatic ties between the two countries were severed following the ouster of then-Egyptian president and Ankara ally Mohamed Morsi.
Soukry had visited Turkey two weeks ago in an expression of solidarity after the devastating earthquakes that killed more than 50,000 people in southeastern Turkey and northwestern Syria.
Egypt’s foreign minister said last month that talks with Turkey on a possible reappointment of ambassadors would take place at the right time.
Consultations between senior officials from the countries’ foreign ministries began in 2021, as Turkey began seeking to normalize relations with Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Israel and Saudi Arabia.
However, the normalization of the Ankara-Cairo relationship accelerated after Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan shook hands in Doha during the World Cup.
The two presidents may have another one-on-one meeting after the May 14 Turkish elections, Cavusoglu stressed.
