Clearly superior throughout the match, Red Star beat Baskonia 90-72 in Belgrade for the sixth matchday of the Euroleague and, with a 4-2 record, temporarily found themselves in the top four, waiting for Friday’s results and leaving the Basques firmly trailing with 0-6.
Saša Obradovic’s players struggled in the first half, in which they found themselves losing by -3 at the end of it, but in the replay with a run difference they initially brought +14 and gradually +18 afterwards to reach the final result.
Leading the winners were Miller-McIntyre with 20, Nuora with 19 and Kalinic, Moneke with 12 points each.
For the Basques, Louvavu-Cambaro stood out with 24 and Diallo with 12 points.
The match
With an offensive superiority, the Red Star led +5 and +6 at times at the start of the match. Nuora took the situation into his own hands in the Serbian racket and brought +7 for the Serbs, while Kalinic’s three-pointer “cut off” the Basques’ lead when they were reducing the score. Asteras cut to -2 with a 4-0 run and Louvavos-Cambaro’s 3-pointer cut it to 21-20 at the end of the first period.
A 5-0 Astera run at the start of the second period brought Saša Obradović’s team up +3, but Baskonia responded with a 7-0 run with plenty of offensive options for +4. Diallo led the Spaniards in this interval for the visitors +6, consecutive three-pointers from the Serbian brought the level, but in the same way the Basques then reached +5, despite the efforts of Moneke, for 40-43 at the conclusion of the half.
Asteras had 9/21 two-pointers, 6/12 three-pointers, 4/4 shots and 18 rebounds. Baskonia had respectively 12/26 two-pointers, 6/13 three-pointers, 29 rebounds and 10 assists.
A 4-0 run by Baskonia at the start of the third period brought the Basques up +5, but a 5-0 run by Asteras tied the game at 47-47. Motejunas starred in an 8-0 run for the “red and whites” of Belgrade for 55-50 and a 7-0 run with many leading players in the attack brought +12 for Saša Obradović’s team. Louvavos-Cambaro’s personal 4-0 run cut it to 64-56 and Dos Santos’s own made it 72-58 at the end of the quarter.
Miller-McIntyre was +12 to +14 for the Serbs at the start of the fourth period and Nuora was +16. Dos Santos brought +17 for the hosts, who were setting the stage for the pink card, and kept +15 to +16 in the interval. Miller-McIntyre made it 85-67, Baskonia with a 4-0 run reduced to -14 and finally the match ended at 90-72.
