Two friends from Texas are making the rounds on the internet for their will to live and their… traveling souls: The two of them, although 81 years old, traveled around the world in 80 days and recently returned home after from a 2.5 month trip.

Sandy Hazelip – a doctor – and Ellie Huby – a photographer – met 23 years ago during a medical mission in Zambia and became good friends.

The two were inspired by Jules Verne’s novel ‘Around the World in 80 Days’ and started planning their trip in 2020 when the two friends were working and Hazelip suggested the idea of ​​traveling for as many days as their ages .

It took nearly two more years for them to begin their journey as travel restrictions related to COVID-19 were in effect at most of their planned destinations.

“We have postponed it until 2023, so that we can include in the trip Antarctica which was on our original itinerary” said the two intrepid grandmothers.

The trip started with a plane flight to Argentina on January 11th. Sandy and Eli then boarded a ship to cross the dreaded Drake Passage.
