The ruling came after an appeal by anti-abortionists, ten months after the US Supreme Court’s historic decision that gave every US state the right to ban abortions on its own soil
The suspension of the marketing authorization of mifepristone pills, used for the medical termination of pregnancy, “crosses the line”, US President Joe Biden said today.
“What the judge did is over the line,” the US president said shortly before departing Washington for Belfast, Northern Ireland.
On Friday, Texas federal judge Matthew Kasmeric vindicated abortion opponents by suspending the nationwide licensing of mifepristone pills. This particular formulation has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for more than 20 years and is used annually by nearly half a million women in the US.
The ruling came after an appeal by anti-abortionists, ten months after the US Supreme Court’s historic decision that gave every US state the right to ban abortions on its own soil.
The Justice Department asked an appeals court on Monday to freeze the Texas judge’s decision. It was preceded by the assurance from President Biden that he is determined to “fight” against the decision, which he described as an “unprecedented attempt” to deprive women of “fundamental freedoms”.
