The 26-year-old was attacked while jogging
The Italian government is considering moving many bears from Trentino to other parts of the country after the death last week of a young man who was attacked by a male bear while jogging, the environment ministry said.
According to local authorities, around 100 brown bears now live in the mountainous, wooded areas of Trentino, although the original plan to reintroduce them to the area in the 1990s predicted that there would be no more than 50. On the rare occasions they encountered humans there were no serious problems, but on April 5 a 26-year-old man was killed by a male bear, angering residents and alarming local authorities.
The bear responsible for the death of Andrea Papi has been identified thanks to DNA tests from samples taken from his body and is due to be euthanized. Wildlife management agencies are also considering killing other bears that could pose a danger to residents.
Environment Minister Gilberto Puiqueto and the president of the province, Maurizio Fugati, met today in Rome to consider “a plan to relocate” some bears from Trentino to other areas. They did not specify how many bears would be relocated, or to which regions of Italy. The environment minister pledged to discuss the matter with his colleague at the interior ministry.
Today, 120-200 bears live in Italy, mainly in Trentino and Abruzzo. Papi’s death from a bear attack is the first recorded in the country in at least 150 years.
The confederation of agricultural organizations Coldiretti today called for the adoption of “a national plan” for the management of bears, wolves and wild boars.
