With the opposition denouncing him for the study he showed in relation to the enactment of the new pension law by publishing it in the government newspaper a few hours later the “green light” of the Constitutional Council and with the unions responding negatively to their invitation, for a meeting at the Elysee – giving a “date in the streets” on May Day, the president Emmanuel Macron will address the French people on Monday night, clearly wanting to put an end to the protests and social tensions of recent months.

Yesterday, inspecting under strict security measures the work on the part of Notre Dame that had been destroyed by fire, he avoided referring directly to the pension, but said that when four years ago he announced that the restoration work would be completed in 2023 at least they believed and many accused him, but now it turns out that he was right. In the government camp, the prevailing opinion is that with yesterday’s decision of the Constitutional Council (which did not concern the substance of the pension, but whether the procedure followed was compatible with the provisions of the French Constitution), the ratification of pension reform and raising the retirement age “through the democratic way”.

A democratic path followed in a French National Assembly in which the government did not have the necessary majority to approve the new pension system, but also where the opposition did not have the necessary majority to reject it.

As far as the opposition is concerned, the center-right Republican party considers that the decision of the Council is unquestionable, the far-right Marine Le Pen raised the issue of the composition of the Council, while the leader of the left-wing coalition Nupes stated that with its decision the Council leaned towards “presidential monarchy and not to the sovereign French people’.

Unions accuse President Macron of disregarding workers’ reactions and announce strike action ahead of May Day, mainly in the rail transport sector.

Protest rallies and incidents took place in several French cities last night.

In Paris, around 4000 protesters gathered in front of City Hallwhile the police announced that 138 people were detained.
