Iran has formally invited Saudi Arabia’s King Salman to visit the country, an Iranian foreign ministry spokesman said today, after the two regional rivals agreed to end years of hostility following a Chinese-brokered deal in March.

After years of poor relations that have fueled proxy clashes in the Middle East, where Tehran and Riyadh have backed opposing sides from Yemen to Syria, Shiite Iran and Sunni Saudi Arabia have reached an agreement to end a seven-year diplomatic rift.

“The Iranian president (Ebrahim Raisi) has sent an invitation to the Saudi king in return for Riyadh’s invitation to him,” Nasser Kanaani said in a televised press conference.

Technical delegations from the two countries are preparing to officially reopen their missions, and Tehran said the missions will resume operations by May 9, Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency reported.
