An anti-monarchy group has grandiose plans for his coronation King Charles. In fact, dozens of citizens who belong to this group will “pour out” into the streets wearing yellow t-shirts and holding placards with the slogan: “You are not our king”.
Republic, a group that wants the monarchy abolished and the king replaced by an elected, democratic head of state, has planned a demonstration on May 6. Its website is encouraging protesters to wear yellow T-shirts and join organizers in Trafalgar Square from 6am on the big day.
The group, which claims the support of more than 80,000 people, says more than a thousand will join them to protest along the route on the day of King Charles’ coronation. It is organized and headed by Graham Smith, who recently accused the BBC of not being impartial in its coverage of the monarchy.
“On Saturday, May 6, the world’s eyes will be on the coronation. This is the time to make our objection loud, visible and impossible to ignore. Pledge to add your voice to the call for a democracy,” they say in their message.
Potential anti-monarchy protesters have been instructed to create a “yellow sea of people” and send a resounding message about the monarchy. They plan to protest near the statue of King Charles I in the middle of the Trafalgar Square roundabout.
Mr Smith is the author of the book, Abolish The Monarchy, which will be published in early June.
Anti-coronation protests are planned across the UK, particularly in capital cities. In Scotland, an independence march is planned to take place at the same time as the coronation. In Edinburgh there will be a protest at the National Monument of Scotland. More than 250 people have expressed interest in going.
Speaking last month, Mr Smith said Charles should be criticized like any other politician, but in an attempt to explain why the group organized more protests against the king than against his late mother, he admitted: “The Queen enjoyed respect and that prevented people from directly criticizing her.”
And he continued: “Carlos is a very different person. He just inherited the throne and succession is an issue. We think now is the right time to push… Everything has changed, it’s a very different monarchy. This has changed the nature of the campaign. Charles is just a guy in a suit who spends a lot of our money. He should be treated like a politician,” he added.
