The same decision was made by other media outlets from the USA and Canada due to Elon Musk’s new policies
Sweden’s public radio network, the Sveriges Radioannounced today that it is ceasing operations at Twitterfollowing similar moves on United States and the Canadadue to the controversial decisions of the social networking platform owned by Elon Musk.
“Sveriges Radio has been deprioritizing its presence on Twitter for some time and we have now taken the decision to completely stop our activity on the platform, as well as to remove a number of accounts,” the Swedish radio network announced on its blog.
“We need to consolidate and prioritize SR’s online presence and Twitter has changed over the year and become less important for us,” explained Sveriges Radio’s head of social media Kristian Gillinger.
Last week, the public American network NPR was the first major media outlet to quit Twitter in protest of the new policy of the platform bought in October by Elon Musk for $44 billion.
Yesterday, the Canadian public media group CBC/Radio-Canada did the same, after Elon Musk’s platform decided to label them a “government-sponsored media”.
The group complained of an attack on its independence, through a false label.
The Sveriges Radiowhose main Twitter account is labeled “publicly funded media”, did not denounce the fact, however, considering it a “correct identification” of its funding.
Swedish Public Radio and Television (SVT) are both 100% public.
Major media exits from Twitter follow the implementation of a controversial new certification policy under which only those who pay get the blue “tick” since last April.
In early April, Twitter unticked them The New York Times (of 55 million subscribers), which is too left-wing for the tastes of a section of conservatives.
Since buying Twitter, Musk has deregulated content moderation, allowing the return of large numbers of users banned for hate speech or misinformation.
It also went through massive layoffs that reduced the platform’s workforce from 7,500 to less than 2,000.
