The fate of at least 15 migrants is unknown after the shipwreck in which they were traveling off the coast of Sfax, the Tunisian coast guard announced yesterday.

The boat had set sail from an island in the Kerkena complex bound for Italy, when it sank under unclear circumstances.

Such accidents off the coast of Tunisia have increased dramatically in recent weeks, with dozens of migrants missing or dying trying to reach Italy.

According to figures from the International Organization for Migration (IOM), more than 400 migrants died between January and March trying to cross the central Mediterranean to reach the EU. This is the highest number of deaths recorded in the respective period from 2017.

Tunisia’s coast guard recently announced that more than 14,000 migrants, mostly from sub-Saharan Africa, were apprehended or rescued in the first quarter of the year, five times the number compared to the same period last year.
