Thousands of French people took to the streets again today to protest the proposed pension reform, which will raise the retirement age to 64 from the current 62.

Ahead of Emmanuel Macron’s visit to the southern French city of Ganges, police cleared protesters carrying pots and pans, giving the French president a raucous welcome.

In some cases, police confiscated cooking utensils, according to French reports.

Recently, pots and pans have had their place at protests in France, evoking images of the anti-austerity protests in Argentina.

“Eggs and pans, I use in cooking,” Macron said as he began his visit to southern France, where some protesters threw eggs and potatoes at the French president.

French opposition figures have criticized the ban on the use of cookware at demonstrations.

“Pots will not help France to progress,” President Macron from Alsace said yesterday on Wednesday.

Cookware maker Cristel commented on Twitter: “Mr. President, at @cristelfrance we make cookware that moves France forward.”

As part of today’s demonstrations, protesters in Lille symbolically blocked a railway line, while in Paris members of labor unions marched in protest to the commercial district of La Défense.
