Ukraine is joining the EU’s Civil Protection Mechanism, the European solidarity framework that helps countries hit by a disaster, the European Commission said in a statement.
The Commissioner for Crisis Management, Yanes Lenarcic, was in Kyiv to officially sign an agreement on behalf of the European Union to grant Ukraine the status of associate member of the Mechanism.
The EU Civil Protection Mechanism has been channeling emergency aid to Ukraine from across Europe since the start of Russia’s war against Ukraine in February 2022. In its largest and longest-running operation, more than 88,000 tonnes of equipment, food and medicine have sent to Ukraine through the Mechanism. More recently, more than 1,000 fully EU-funded generators were mobilized in Ukraine from the rescEU strategic energy reserves. Now, as a full member, Ukraine will also be able to send aid through the Mechanism when another country is in crisis.
The EU is also providing an additional €55 million in humanitarian funding to Ukraine on top of the €145 million already allocated earlier this year. This new humanitarian funding will focus on preparing for next winter, the Commission points out.
