The information is confirmed in a message sent by the ministry’s crisis response unit to the Italians who are trapped in the Sudanese capital
Italy will attempt today to evacuate its citizens from Sudan, where deadly fighting between the army and paramilitaries has been raging for more than a week, the Italian Foreign Ministry announced.
“The government is putting in place a repatriation plan for the safety of our fellow citizens who are currently in Sudan,” Deputy Foreign Minister Maria Tripodi told Tgcom24 television today.
The information is confirmed in a message sent by the ministry’s crisis response unit to the Italians who are trapped in the Sudanese capital.
“We are working on a window of opportunity for the departure from Khartoum, which could take place today, Sunday, April 23,” the crisis unit said in this message, which was cited by the Italian news agency AGI.
“The assembly point will be from now until 12:00 at the ambassador’s residence,” adds the said unit of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, clarifying that this operation to remove the citizens was organized in collaboration with the Italian Ministry of Defense.
Since April 15, the two generals in power after the 2021 coup have launched a merciless war in Sudan.
The violence, mainly in Khartoum and Darfur (west), has claimed the lives, according to the World Health Organization, of more than 420 people and injured more than 3,700. They have also caused the displacement of tens of thousands of people to other states of Sudan or outside the country’s borders, to Chad and Egypt. They have also brought about the mobilization of countries to remove their nationals.
