Russia-US Cold War: Leaders did not shake hands

by

Talks between the United States and Russia in Geneva on security guarantees continue behind closed doors, the Russian news agency TASS reported, noting that the heads of delegations did not shake hands.

According to the photos that were made public, from the beginning of the meeting, the leaders enter the room and sit opposite each other at two separate tables. Then the leaders, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov and US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman, go to stand in front of the flags for the standard photo under the protocol.

The two high-ranking diplomats, however, preferred to keep their social distances. Ryabkov and Sherman did not shake hands or choose any other form of greeting, such as those introduced during the pandemic. Although in previous meetings in Geneva, for example, they greeted each other jokingly with their elbows about the photos of the protocol.

On the eve of the talks, Ryabkov said in an interview with TASS that he did not expect to hear a clear position from the American side regarding the Russian proposals, nor any explanations for its position. At the same time, he expressed serious doubts about the United States’ readiness for such a dialogue.
