French President Emmanuel Macron said today that he would deploy thousands more police officers on the country’s streets, at a time when his opponents in the presidential election say he has disappointed France on security issues.
Security, after all, has become a major issue in the run-up to the April presidential race.
“Today, our police and gendarmes manage many missions that make no difference to your daily life: guarding public buildings and inmates being treated, attending court hearings – which prevents them from patrolling neighborhoods,” he said. Macron.
“We will relieve them of these responsibilities by transferring these missions to administrative staff or through private contracts; this will allow us to release a number equal to 3,500 police and gendarmes.
Defending his work, after his conservative opponent Valerie Pecres and far-right candidates Marin Le Pen and Eric Zemour repeatedly criticized him, the French president said:
“For the last five years, we have reinvested in our security.”
According to the head of state of France, during his presidency there was a decrease in the number of robberies and other crimes.
“There is a serious crisis of power in this country, with an increase in violence and a sense of impunity,” Pekres told Reuters, dismissing Emanuel Macron for assigning so many police officers to administrative posts.
Emanuel Macron has not officially announced that he will run for a second term in the presidency, but it is considered almost certain that he will be “present” in the spring elections.
