The President of the European Parliament, the Italian Social Democrat David Sassoli, died during the night Monday to Tuesday in his homeland, at the age of 65, his spokesman announced.
“David Sassoli died on January 11 at 01:15 in the oncology center of Aviano, Italy, where he was hospitalized” since the end of December, announced via Twitter Roberto Cuillo, the representative of the President of the European Parliament.
“The date and place of his funeral will be announced in the coming hours,” he added.

The President of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, expressed her grief over the loss of the President of the European Parliament, David Sassoli, in a tweet, emphasizing that he was “a great European” and a “proud Italian”.
