“The fate of five people is still unknown. Their last known location has not been determined. A rescue team has been deployed in the area,” an official said
Five people were carried away today by avalanche in the Dartsula region of the west Nepal and since then their fate is unknown.
It was initially reported that at least 12 people had been swept away by the avalanche that occurred at 2:45 p.m. (local time), but seven of them contacted authorities and said they were safe and sound.
“The fate of five people is still unknown. Their last known location has not been determined. A rescue team has been deployed to the area,” official Kiran Joshi told Xinhua news agency, noting that bad weather was hampering the search and rescue operation. “We intend to send a helicopter tomorrow to join the operation, weather permitting,” he added.
According to Joshi, the avalanche swept away villagers looking for yarsagumba – a fungus known for its aphrodisiac properties, called the “Viagra of the Himalayas” (a kilo costs around €30,000).
