Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said, in an interview published yesterday in the Washington Post newspaper, that he learned from press reports – and not from Washington – that there was a leak of classified American documents that mainly related to Ukraine’s war with Russia.

“I was not informed by the White House or the Pentagon in advance,” Mr. Zelensky emphasized to the American newspaper. “We didn’t have that information, I wasn’t aware,” he added.

Asked about it by CNN, Wing Commander Pat Ryder, the Pentagon spokesman, limited himself to saying on Tuesday that he was “not in a position to say whether that is true or not,” while reiterating that Washington supports Kiev in the conflict.

The US classified documents, which came to light in early April after being leaked online, reveal uncomfortable details about how Washington views the war, showing – among other things – that the US was particularly concerned in late February about the situation in which the Ukrainian air defense has fallen.

A young American soldier was arrested for leaking these documents and was prosecuted on April 14.

“For us, everything that informs our enemy in advance is, in one way or another, a disadvantage,” Mr. Zelensky said.

The episode “doesn’t benefit the reputation of the White House, it doesn’t benefit the reputation of the US,” Mr Zelensky said, comparing press coverage of the leaks to a “television soap opera”.
