THE president of Ukraine is making a surprise visit to Finland where he will participate in a summit meeting of the prime ministers of the Northern European countries, the Finnish presidency announced.

On the sidelines of the summit, Mr Volodymyr Zelensky he will meet with his Finnish counterpart Sauli Niinisto, whose country joined NATO, to discuss “the struggle for the defense of Ukraine”.

He will also have bilateral meetings with the Prime Ministers of Sweden Ulf Kristerson, Norway Jonas Gar Store, Denmark Mette Frederiksen and Iceland Katrin Jakobsdottir.

“In order to join NATO and support alliances to find help, basic diplomatic work needs to be done. Ukraine is doing it today,” Daria Zaryvna, adviser to the Ukrainian president, wrote on Telegram.

All Northern European countries have pledged support, both economic and military, to Ukraine.

Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Norway are also participating in international efforts to supply Ukraine with heavy weapons by offering their own Leopard 2 tanks or providing money to buy them.

Yesterday, Denmark announced it was sending €228m worth of military aid to Ukraine to boost its ability to launch an attack in the coming months. Since the start of the Russian offensive against Ukraine, Denmark has offered Kiev military aid worth 1.47 billion euros.

According to German newspaper Tagesspiegel, Volodymyr Zelenskiy will visit Berlin on May 13, where he will be received with military honors by German Chancellor Olaf Solz on May 14 before traveling to Aachen the same day to receive the 2023 Charlemagne Prize.
