British security forces are prepared for his coronation King Charlesthe minister said today Security Tom Tugenhand hours after a man was arrested outside Buckingham Palace for throwing what looked like “hunting cartridges” into the palace grounds, while British police will deploy 29,000 men in the streets of London on Saturday, the day of the coronation.
“We are not complacent under any circumstances”the minister told Sky News. “I’m very pleased to see that the police responded incredibly quickly, in an incredibly professional manner to the incident last night.”
He added that preparing for the event took months of planning, taking into account any number of different threats.
The incident outside the palace on Tuesday came days before Saturday’s coronation, which is expected to draw large crowds to London in addition to heads of state from around the world invited for the official ceremony.
Tugenhand told Times Radio that the event was “one of the most important security operations the country has ever produced.”
“The police are, in other words, everywhere, and our intelligence services and other security forces are fully aware of the challenge we face,” he said.
Police yesterday arrested a man who approached the gates of Buckingham Palace and threw what appeared to be “hunting cartridges” into the palace grounds. The area was cordoned off after a suspicious backpack was found. Firefighters rushed to the scene, who proceeded with a controlled explosion for precautionary reasons.
