A “show of force” in the Kazakh capital, Almaty, appears to be being carried out by Russian forces of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO). Demonstrating strength in its so-called “backyard” to end the unrest, Moscow is sending a message that it will not be left out of developments in the wider region, which it sees as a privileged field.
The video, obtained by Ruptly from the Russian Ministry of Defense, shows Russian soldiers guarding the strategically important Almaty airport they have occupied.
The video shows Russian soldiers armored like lobsters, drones, and wheeled armored vehicles. Another video shows a Russian plane evacuating foreign diplomats and Russian citizens from Kazakhstan, with the intervention of Russian GSTO forces.
However, according to TASS, the President of Kazakhstan Kasim-Jomart Tokayev stated that the GSTO peacekeeping force will begin to leave the country within two days.
As he put it, “the coup attempt failed.” “Overall, the acute phase of the counter-terrorism operation is over. “The situation is stable in all areas,” Tokayev told the lower house.
Kazakhstan security forces have arrested 9,900 people so far as part of investigations into last week’s riots in the Central Asian country, the interior ministry said on Monday.
