The volcano erupted on Thursday, with pyroclastic flows heading into the Seca and Santa Teresa canyons, according to the latest reports of its activity. Ash fell on communities near the canyons, as well as other nearby towns, including San Pedro Yepocapa, Ojo de Agua and Finca Palo Verde.
Ceniza and Las Lajas, villages near the canyons, were also affected by the eruption, according to Guatemala’s National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology.
Authorities have called on the population and tourists not to approach the cordoned-off area, which stretches seven kilometers long around the volcano. He also recommended taking into account warnings issued by municipal and county authorities, such as the need for precautionary evacuations, as well as being prepared for any evacuation.
