Paraguayo “Pagio” Kubas, who came 3rd in last week’s presidential election in Paraguay, was arrested on Friday.

Koumbas led protests, challenging the election results and demanding a recount, although international organizations said there was no reason to question the integrity of the process.

Koumbas, 61, is charged with “disturbing the peace” and other offenses, according to the arrest warrant issued earlier. The head of the “National Crusade” party surprised many with the percentage he secured (almost 23%), taking 3rd place, behind elected president Santiago Peña (42%) and Efrain Alegre (27%).

He was arrested hours before his arrival in the capital Asuncion, where he was expected to mobilize his supporters in new demonstrations.

“As you can see, I’m being arrested,” Koumbas said in a video posted on social media. “All criminals in this country should be handcuffed, like Paraguayan Cuba,” he commented, before being whisked away in a patrol car.
