Four people threw charcoal diluted in water into the fountain protesting “the black future that awaits humanity” and which is already manifesting itself in droughts and increasingly frequent floods.
When the police arrived, the activists passively resisted and were removed by the officers.
The Fountain of the Four Rivers was created in 1651 by the sculptor and architect Bernini and depicts four major rivers of the four continents over which papal power had spread: the Nile of Africa, the Danube of Europe, the Ganges of Asia and the RÃo de la Plata of America.
It has in its center the Obelisk of Domitian while the base of the fountain is a basin from the center of which volumes of travertine rise to support four river-gods and above them the obelisk, surmounted by the coat of arms of the Pamphili family, a dove with a olive branch.
