The victim had served in various positions in the judicial system during the days of the Western-backed government.
After retaking power in August 2021, the Taliban replaced all judges with members of the old guard of the fundamentalist Sunni movement. Some former judges have tried desperately to flee the country, while many of those who have remained believe they are in danger.
