Ukraine: Satisfaction with Western stance on Russian “ultimatums”

by

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba today praised his country’s “unity” with the West over what he called Russian “ultimatums” during talks in Geneva between Russia and the United States.

“The Geneva talks have shown that our strength lies in the unity and coherence of positions on Russian ultimatums,” Kuleba said in a telephone interview with US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, according to a statement issued the day after the meeting.

Kuleba and Blinken discussed the next steps to prevent Moscow from launching an offensive against Ukraine, which has been fighting a pro-Russian separatist uprising on the east side of its territory since 2014, according to the statement.

Kuleba stressed that the United States remains Ukraine’s key partner for its security.

Tensions over Ukraine have risen in recent months, with Washington and Kiev’s European allies accusing Russia of mobilizing troops near the border to invade.

Moscow has demanded written guarantees that exclude Ukraine and Georgia from joining the North Atlantic Alliance.

The Geneva talks only resulted in the promise of new contacts between the Russians and the Americans.

Reacting to the rise of pro-Western power in Ukraine in early 2014, Russia annexed the Crimean peninsula and supported, according to Kiev and the West, an separatist uprising in the eastern border areas of its territory.

This conflict counts more than 13,000 dead to date.
