Russia will be defeated ‘in the same way’ that Nazism was defeated in 1945, Ukrainian president says Volodymyr Zelensky today, May 8, a day celebrating the victory of the Allied forces against Nazi Germany and the end of World War II.

“All the old evil that modern Russia has brought back will be defeated in the same way that Nazism was defeated,” Zelensky stressed in a speech posted on his social media accounts, in which he pledged to “liberate” the regions of Ukraine which has been occupied by the Russian army.

“As we destroyed evil together then, we are destroying a similar evil together now,” stressed the Ukrainian president, adding “this evil, although today is different, has the same goal: enslavement and destruction.”

“We will win!”, Zelensky pledged, in this speech recorded in front of the World War II monument erected on the banks of the Dnieper River in Kiev. “We will never forget the contribution of the Ukrainian people to the victory against Nazism,” he pointed out.

Zelensky also accused Moscow of choosing “aggression and annexation, occupation and displacement, massacre and torture, bombing cities and burning villages” instead of democratic “ideals”.

“We will not lose what we have won, we will recover everything the enemy has conquered,” he emphasized.
Moreover, in an attempt to further sever Ukraine’s ties to its Soviet past, Zelensky has introduced a bill to parliament that officially designates May 8 as a day of remembrance and victory over Nazi Germany. At the same time, May 9, when Russia celebrates Victory Day and the end of World War II, will now be Europe Day in Ukraine.

“We are returning to our state an honest history without ideological influences. Most countries worldwide remember on May 8 the glorious victory over the Nazis,” he explained in the video.

“Today I signed the relevant decree and every year starting tomorrow, May 9, we will honor our historical unity – the unity of all Europeans who destroyed Nazism and will defeat Russia,” using a word Ukrainians use to describe what they call Russian fascism.

Moscow has stepped up its attacks on Ukraine ahead of tomorrow’s May 9 holiday, with some analysts estimating that the Russian president Vladimir Putin he wants to have achieved some victory by then.

Zelensky pointed out that Europe cannot allow this to happen, stressing that it is time once again to defeat “evil” in order to “ensure that no one ever again enslaves other peoples or destroys other countries.”

“We do not yet know the date of our victory, but we know that it will be a day of celebration for all of Ukraine, for all of Europe, for all of the free world,” he emphasized.
