Bolivian Vice President David Cokeuanka and six cabinet members have been confirmed to be infected with the new coronavirus, the Bolivian government announced on Tuesday.
In a statement, the presidency confirmed that members of the government had been infected with the virus, but said it was all stable, isolated and under medical supervision.
These include Presidency Ministers Eduardo del Castillo, Defense Minister Edmundo Novigio, Education Minister Edgar Paris, Development Planning Gabriela Mendoza, Justice Ivan Lima and Foreign Minister Rachel Maita.
“They have received ‘two doses’ of COVID-19 vaccines, but the vice-president has only received ‘the first dose’,” Communications Undersecretary Gabriela Alcon told reporters, adding that everyone was “in very good health, in stable condition”. are monitored by doctors and have been “isolated”.
According to the latest figures from the Ministry of Health, Bolivia has recorded 20,000 deaths due to complications of COVID-19 (exactly 19,999) out of a total of 686,023 SARS-CoV-2 infections. In the first week of the new year, the country was hit – like other states in the region – by a new wave of pandemics, with the number of cases exceeding 11,000 on a daily basis.
