Ukrainian army prepares counteroffensive to try to retake Russian-held areas

A Ukrainian general said Sunday that Russian forces hoped to capture Bakhmut before today’s holiday in Russia commemorating the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany in World War II.
“The enemy did not take Bakhmut,” the spokesman for the eastern command of the Ukrainian forces, Serhii Serevaty, told Reuters by telephone. “There are no significant changes in positions,” he added.
The Ukrainian military is preparing a widely expected counteroffensive to try to recapture Russian-held areas in southern and eastern Ukraine.
Russian and Ukrainian forces have been fighting for control of Bakhmut for months. Russia considers the capture of Bakhmut a springboard for the capture of other Ukrainian cities.
